Accounting institutions and organizations

Get the right idea

For questions, rules and regulations concerning the do's and don'ts of accounting it is a good idea to check with an accounting institution or organization, or their web site. Most governments will have departments and institutions regarding accounting practices and developments. They are meant to be an unbiased source of information and can be helpful when in doubt.

However, accounting is a versatile art, and even the official institutions cannot give you all the information you need or request. It would be wise to prepare your questions or problems well in advance before contacting any accounting institution, making sure you are clear about what you need their help on. Otherwise it is certainly possible you will end up more confused and unsure than before you contacted them.

If you are conducting your business across borders the accounting waters can get very murky. Between the U.S. and the E.U., for example, there are many accounting differences, not to mention tax rules and regulations. Somehow all these free trade zones that are springing up across the world only seem to make matters worse rather than easier. Especially for a small or medium sized business.

But don't be put off. If you're market is across the border there is no reason you should not sell there. Just get the facts straight and you will have smooth sailing.
